a friend to hold your hand. a professional to smooth the way. a constant voice in difficult times.
Death is before me today:
like the home that a man longs to see,
after years spent as a captive.
from “Dialogue of a Misanthrope with His Soul,” ca 2000 BC

My name is Seraphina.
I am so glad you’re here.
Yes, you. Right now.
Welcome. Pull up a chair. Pour yourself some water or a cup of tea. Grab a snack. Stay a while.
I work as an end-of-life doula, a companion to families as they navigate their grief, and a death and home funeral educator. I am in the process of training as a rabbi at the ALEPH Ordination Program and am also training as a clinical chaplain through the ACPE.
I have spent hours sitting with families as a chaplain in training and have helped them to say goodbye to their loved ones and hello to the world that opens on the other side of their passing.
If you are new to this space and to this way of thinking about the end of life, I am eager to sit with you as you open yourself to the possibilities that are open to us when we choose to engage with the death of ourselves and our loved ones from a place of curiosity despite our fear.
What is Death Midwifery?
Death Midwifery is rooted in the process of bringing death into the realm of human agency. It allows us to make choices about how we want to experience the final moment in our lives and all that lead up to it.
Death Midwifery is the act of fearfully and lovingly engaging in the experience of dying, both as supportive agents in the dying of another and as the dying ourselves.
Death Midwifery is taking the power inherent in transcendent, transient space and bringing it back into ourselves.
